The China bureau is looking for a researcher with a nose for digging out information to cover the world’s second largest economy and new major power. The researcher occupies a linchpin role in a team covering all the topics important to understanding China today -- from large innovative tech companies to slowing economic growth, high-level political machinations and climbing debt. Duties involve working with editors and other reporters to develop stories, tracking down sources for interviews and diving into documents for in-depth investigations.
The successful candidate will have the determination to look beneath the surface of events to find the deeper story. A thick skin and the inability to take “no” for an answer are crucial. A nimble mind able to jump across a range of stories and the temperament for teamwork are pusses. Fluency in Chinese is a must, as is the ability to write clearly in English.
