We are now seeking a high caliber candidate to fill the following vacancy in Seoul.
The Wall Street Journal is looking for a reporter to cover North Korea. The beat is based in Seoul and will be intense, covering everything that Pyongyang can throw at you at all hours of the day and night, from missile launches to detentions of American citizens. Beyond the day-to-day flow of news, we’re looking for someone who can report out deeper stories about what’s going on in and around the world's most isolated country. That includes the economic changes taking root in Pyongyang and the countryside; the elaborate trade networks that the country has forged all over the globe; and the way the north has managed to defy the global community in its pursuit of nuclear and missile technology. The successful candidate will be able to dive deeply into developments in Pyongyang and Seoul, while keeping the perspective valued by our global audience. A few years of experience in general news reporting is preferred. Korean language skills are a must.
In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to explain to readers what is happening in South Korean domestic politics, and in particular what the country’s first left-leaning administration in nearly a decade means for inter-Korean relations and the U.S.-Korea alliance. The successful candidate will be able to dive deep into the goings-on in Pyongyang and Seoul, but not get lost in the weeds, keeping in perspective the American audience that the Wall Street Journal caters to. A facility with security and nuclear issues isn’t necessary, but being able to learn quickly is a must. The successful candidate should have at least a few years of experience in general news reporting. Korean language is required for this job.
